i believe that you could argue for neither sides, however, it is already shown through the constitution that there are limitations on both sides, but specifically under the amendment 10 it gives the states power. Stating"The governmental powers not listed in the Constitution for the national government are powers that the states, or the people of those states, can have." meaning the state is able to determine divorces, driver license, etc.Another factor to think about when wanting the sate to have power is the fact that it is better being represented from someone that came from the same place as you, and understanding the same situation rather than those who just represent by using law.

I believe the states should have slightly more power, because every state has different views and opinions as well as different needs, which the federal government can't account for by making national laws and regulations.
For example, if a state loved CHICKEN SANWICHES, while another state wanted to outlaw them, the federal government shouldn't interfere by making them illegal. Also If a state legalizes something, the federal gov't SHOULD RESPECT THAT CHOICE.
The Federal gov't should still have almost as much power, otherwise we would have 50 countries instead of states.which may be pretty cool....(just enough power to keep the money flowing and the states in check)

I believe that states should have more power than the federal government. I think this because the states include the citizens, which the citizens know what's best for themselves. The states are the ones who decide and vote on the things that they think are in the best interest to help them survive. The federal government only thinks about the things that really happen with foreign affairs and puts the states and their opinion last.

I believe states should have more power because then they can change more laws and if you don't like the laws that are in place then you can move to a different state that allows or doesn't allow what you want. I think it's good that in tennessee we have click it or ticket and others might hate that law and they can move to a state that doesn't have that law. Or since I'm seventeen I should be able to go see R movies so i would move to a different state if the other state had other laws I liked also.

The government should have more power than the states. This is because if the states had a hand over the federal government, the keeper of the law, than they would have too much room to try and change the country more to their liking, and that could cause civil war. Although we need to have each countries say in defining the federal government, we need a strong government to try to balance the country for all.

I feel that neither should have more power than the other. For if you were to just have say the federal government have more power than states then states would have no opinion on the subject and that we would be ruled under a pseudo-oligarchy. And yet if we allowed the states to have more power than the government, they may feel that they are in control of their own states and not even think they need a federal government.

I feel that the Federal Government should have enough power to hold the states together as a country. The Federal Govt. holds the power/responsibility to protect the states people. Mean while, the states should hold the power to set minatory laws and regulations for its people. States in areas may have different needs then others. Though I support the education of all Americans, I feel the states government should regulate education laws as well as issues such as smoking age, legal drugs, drinking age, gay marriages, divorces, etc. Some of witch are in effect today. In conclusion, States' government should have the power over its people where as the Federal government should have the power over the country (protection, foreign affairs, currency, etc.).

I think that the states should have more power in most circumstances, such as dealing with basic rights of the citizens, because the state representatives are able to easily hear the needs or concerns of the citizens in their area. I feel like this is a just way to distribute the power because the federal government would otherwise have to try to find a way to be “fair” to all fifty states and look out for the interests of every state, which is a lot harder, because some states are a lot larger than others (California compared to Rhode Island) and the states have different compositions of their population. While I think that the states should have more power than the federal government, the federal government should still have a decent amount of power, which should pertain to protecting the nation as a whole, but it should not be able to create restrictions on what states can or cannot do because that would infringe on the individual rights of the states.

I think the federal government should have more power, because there are 50 states and only one government. The federal government should listen to the people more, but when you put everyone's opinion together it causes confusion. There are laws and rights that protect us from the government having too much power. The federal government, for the most part, knows what is best. I believe that is where the name"Founding Father" came from. With cooperation of both, everyone can get more done.

I believe that the goverment should have a slight power lead over the states. The states can create their own laws however the govenment should have the authority to overule the power of the states, if they use the power wrong.

i believe that the stares should have more power because each indvidual state has different oppinons on what they want. If the federal government had more power than the states if they did then the government would do whats best for everyone except whats best for each different state.

i think that the federal government, should have the most power. states have their own wants and needs whereas the governmet has the needs of the whole entire country and beyond to think about. in almost every situation, their needs to be an authority or the big cheese, someone who is their to help and guide you. with too much power comes, competiton among states . if the states had power it would be a complete mess, the government provides a stable authortiy. even though the government isn't perfect, not the list bit, the states just can't have more power than it. nothing is every perfect, with the constant fighting that ther federal government provides, and the problems that arise with each individual state.

In my opinion, I believe that the states should have more power than the federal government. Different states have different needs. Also, if the federal government has more power, each state has to wait for their permissions from the federal, and sometimes it would be too late to execute. Lastly, nobody is perfect, government could also make some bad decisions. It would prevent and decrease the damage if each state could make their own choices rather than the unitary one.

I think the states and the federal government should work together equally. I dont know if the states should have more power since we are one nation, and on the other hand I think states should be able to choose some of their laws so its kind of hard to pick one over another. But i do think they should work together for the good of our nation and to protect citizens' rights. Also if one has power over another it could eventually lead to conflicts between eachother

I think that states have more power than the federal government. Government is just a institution to make some basic laws and rules. And states have power to behave upon these laws. States make more specific decisions that respond to the citizens' will. Everyone can vote in the state but not in the country. The states make different rules for marriage or driver licenses. I think the states better represents and responds to the publics' preference. The federal government is like a frame to set the laws, but the states is like the picture to represent the publics' preference. States can not overstep the federal governments' authority. The federal government should respect the choice at the same time. Either federal government or the states are working for its citizens.

Deciding if the states or the federal gov't should have more power is very difficult. States have different things they'd like to change. For example, gay marriage. Being married as a gay couple is not legal in all states. Obviously, there are gay couples in some states that would like to get married but they cannot. That's where the federal government's power could come in. This is an instance where if the gov't could decide to make it legal or illegal in every state then there would be no confusion, but i also believe the states should have the right to come up with their own laws. However, giving states greater power could make things out of control whereas allowing the federal gov't to maintain overall authority keeps laws leveled. With that said, my position is neutral.

The federal government should have more control than the states because they make decisions based on whats best for the whole country not just whats best for each individual state. And with every state doing its own thing and not following a specific structure they wouldn't be acting on the behalf of the country and therefore foreign affiar policies and other constitutions would not be the same because every state would have their own opinion.

With the exception of basic rights and freedoms that should be protected by the federal government, the states should have more power. This way they could focus more on the specific needs of the citizens in a concentrated area. I don't mean the states should have the kind of power that posed a threat to the success of early America with factions running every colony, but state power, when not abused, is a great way to address the smaller needs of us all on a more manageable scale.

The states should absolutely have more power for several key reasons. 1. It is much easier to control and inspire a functioning society when you have alot less people to govern, therefore the safety of the people is more of a concern than scrambling to get everyone to cooperate. 2. The culture of the region is more preserved, A very important thing to me. 3. Monopolies would be less prevolent, greed-based corpoarations would hopefully dwindle (this is not a given, but a personal hope), and hopefully the effects of capitalism and capitalism itself would perish. HAVING SAID THIS, some aspects of the federal government prove very beneficial to the people, such as 1.The bank system remains corrupted as little as possible, for it is (supposedly)monitored nationally. 2. Currency is oh-so-conveniently uniform. 3.But the most important function of the federal government, in my opinion is that we have the ability to draft for wars, which is essential to protect our nation. I would say this is the main reason federal government, to a limited extent, is important in our lives, for as much as maintaining culture and trying to repress greed is, protecting our nation and maintaining basic liberties of the people is necessary for a flourishing society.

The states should have more power but it should still be fairly evenly distributed. Because as we saw with the Articles of Confederation when the federal government's power is limited too much then our nation can be left very vulnerable. On top of that as John Locke said people are mostly self interested and it is the federal government's job to make sure that they do what is best for the whole. And this is what our government is based on, the balance between classical republicanism and natural rights. With the state government usually protecting the people's natural rights

The individual states of the Union should have more power within their respective borders. The federal law should be used as a default guideline, with contradicting state laws becoming the determining factor. To make this feasible, it would become necessary to raise the standards of education, basic and of a higher level, for political functionality goes hand-in-hand with educated rationality. With the federal government limited to such a degree, it is likely that its power would be reduced to a level of authority similar to the United Nations. It would be lowered to such a degree that the federal government would fully depend on the individual states. As with every hypothesis, this is not a perfect plan. There is a chance that states would merge into something of a cartel to widen the economic gap between the proletariat and bourgeoisie.

I feel that both state and the federal government should have the equal amount of power but with federal government having a little more. The reason I say this is because somethings that we go through as a citizen should be left up to us. For example, whether we should keep abortion or not, that should be a question for the citizens to answer...but then again the federal government should have power as well because if we citizen had "control" over everything and had a say so in everything the govt knows then there would be a big problem in our country which would lead us into war and debt...so thats why I feel that it should be equal power between the two!!!

In my opinion, the federal government and the states should have an equivalent amount of power. However, the federal government should have a smidgeon more. Why? The federal government looks out for the needs of all citizens as a whole. Yet, there are 50 states which would be 50 different ways to manage a government based on where you are living. So in order to be more unified, there should be 1 government where the federal government listens more to the people needs and wants. That way everyone will feel equally represented as a whole. :D

i think that federal government should have more power than the state government because if state government had more power, each state'e policy would eventually become very distinquishable from one another. If it becomes like that there could be trouble regulating good national economy. Also, civil rights policy could be altered because federal government might not have enough power to place orders to protect civil rights for all the citizens in the nation.

I believe the states should have more power than the federal government. Our founding fathers built our government intending the majority of the power to lye in the hands of the people.Since the people are represented more by their states, than the states should hold more power than the government. When America was being established with the Constitution, forming the Government, etc, the states and founding fathers were cautious of allowing the federal government so why allow them to have more power now!?

I believe the federal government should have more power than the individual states because the federal govt. acts as a whole. Being one country, you need one major government to decide things for the entire country. Here we have 50 states that are all different sizes and ranging in population so there should be a federal govt. that can refrain the larger more populated states from taking over and making bigger decisions. Also,it would be too confusing and a hassle if every state had too many different laws and etc.

I think the states and the federal government should have a somewhat equal amount of power. The federal government is good for regulating things that are pretty standard/general but the states would be able to customize things to what would be best for residents of that state. For example, something might be good for 48 out of the 50 states but horrible for those other 2. Therefore, they should be able to decide what is best for them.
I think the federal government should propose the goal that they are trying to reach, or the problem they are trying to solve, and then let the states decide what the best way for them to do that would be.

Without the government the world would be total chaos, so why would you want the states to have more power than the government. It would be total chaos if each individual state had its own say so. The government may not always be right but they try to support the world the best they can. The states should be responsible for making laws and such things within the state. The government should be in charge for balancing the country.

I think the federal goverment should have more power than the state goverments . If the state goverments have more power than the federal goverment , it whould make the whole country a cahos . the federal goverment makes decisions for the whole country , and for each state . the federal goverment makes decisions for eveyone and it includes each state. the goverment of federal goverments make the better decisions.

If it was left up to me to decide I would say both states and federal government should have equal power. As a citizen we experience what problems are going on in our community and what things are going wrong, so we have hands on access to solutions for the problems. With this being said we could present a solution to the federal gov't and they take it from there. Once this is done the federal gov't could make any changes necessary and take control of the gov't for the states. Basically I just think it should be equally divided and work togther more to get any problems solved! TEN-FOUR, OVER & OUT!! :-)

Yea but um i believe that the states should have more power because like joshua said, the states and the citizens know what is best. NOt the feds... THey don't care about the states... They just say that they do.. If the states and the citizens in the states make the lwas... THen the world would be better..

I think government should have more power because it unites all states. Even from old times people united states so nobody would invade them when they are alone. States can fight against each other but head, the government can solve it. States are kind of helpers for the government, so there wouldn't be just one ruler. to rule by just government is hard, sometimes they might not hear the voice of people, but states would.

I think that the states should have more power because it is a smaller government of mostly people from that area, therefore they should know more about that area and know more people from that area. I think that the state governments are just generally more focused on the needs of their specific state. It just seems like its easier to govern one state at a time rather that 50 at one time.
